Exclusive walks through Serengeti wilderness
Covering New Ground Each Day
Walking in Remote Parts of Serengeti National Park
The Serengeti truly offers some of the most spectacular wildlife viewing and scenery in Africa. However, most visitors now experience this solely from a vehicle and often in the company of many other tourists and vehicles. In the early years of Dorobo, we pioneered some special remote walking experiences in the buffer areas to the east of the park where we worked with the local Maasai communities. While we still have a foot in these areas, they have been partially compromised due to various conflicts over the wildlife resources (another whole story) and in 2009 we shifted our focus to some of the wilderness zones within the Serengeti National Park itself that are set aside for walking. We are one of the few companies currently authorized to conduct treks in these areas and they allow a return to the past where one has that unique freedom to walk through exclusive wilderness each day to a new camp location. Our unique and versatile mobile camp allows the flexibility of moving to the best areas. At almost any time of the year, we can put together anywhere from a 3 to 10 day trek that covers new ground each day or every second day for those that want a slower pace to spend more time in a camp/ area.
We operate walks in two wilderness zones in the Serengeti. In the Dry season June-November we operate in the Northeast of Serengeti. The landscape is varied with rolling ridges and hills, rock kopjes, open plains and valleys that support permanent water in the rivers that make their way west ending eventually in Lake Victoria. Wildlife is usually extremely varied and fairly abundant with chances of encountering almost any of the vast array of species found in the Serengeti. In the Green Season December-May we tend to use the southern wilderness area in the Serengeti. This area is more focal for the wildebeest migration in the green season as they seek out the nutrient rich grasses that support the newborn wildebeest and zebra. Being amongst the focal point of the migration attracts an array of predators. The area is composed of large open plains and woodlands with waterholes.
10 Day
Venture into our wilderness zone and proceed to the trailhead. As you enter the wilderness zone, the presence of roads and any human activity will fade away. A private mobile camp and its crew will be ready for your afternoon arrival. Following an early breakfast and coffee by the fire, start preparing for a day of walking. Once your bags are packed, set off along small rivers surrounded by rolling hills and small rock outcroppings. Using a GPS point as your reference, begin your journey on foot, traversing rolling hills towards the private camp. The camp’s crew will have packed up, driven ahead, and set up the site for your arrival around lunchtime. Spend the afternoon relaxing after the day’s walk, with options for shorter bird walks or evening game drives. Throughout your days of walking from camp to camp, you will explore a vast expanse of pristine wilderness on foot.
During these walks, you’ll be accompanied by your armed Dorobo guide, who also serves as a natural history interpreter. The emphasis of these walks is on a complete wilderness experience, encompassing distant bird sounds and the intricate tracks left behind by insects in the sand. This is your opportunity to traverse a large area on foot, mirroring the footsteps of our ancestors. Following breakfast, the guest vehicle will be packed up, marking the start of your journey out of the wilderness zone. You can then continue your game viewing in the Serengeti or opt to fly/drive to your next destination.
